IN THE BOTANIC GARDENS
Interest Focuses On Glasshouses
At this time of the year the attention of visitors to the Botanic Gardens focuses more than usual on the glasshouses in which may be seen an extensive collection of plants from various regions of the world. Cunningham Glasshouse.— On the eastern side of the gallery may be seen the blueflowering Browallia speciosa major, Acalyphas, Cordylines, and Aphelandras, while in the western side Begonias. Coleus, and Bougainvilleas above the bench are most attractive. Of the baskets upstairs the species of Columnea are the most predominant. Downstairs in the bay on the eastern side, several orchids are to be found in flower, these include the Starfish Orchid (Macroplectrum sesquipedale) and the deep lemon flowering Dendrobitfm Fimbriatum var. oculatum, while in various other parts of the downstairs, Begonias. Ferns, Peperomias and Anthuriums may be seen. Townend Glasshouse.— Here is to be seen displays of Cyclamen, Primula obconica, Winter Begonias. Smithianthas and Capsicums or ornamental peppers. Garrick Cactus And Succulent House.— Cactus and Succulents from various regions of the world are on display. Fem House.—An extensive and varied collection of New Zealand ferns is on display. Around The Grounds Along the border near the office may be seen Camellia sasanqua in flower, while in various party of the gardens oaks and maples are most attractive with their autumn foliage.
