Emergency Action Theme Of C.G.S. Annual Exercise

WELLINGTON, May 5. The problems of military operations in South-east Asia will again be the Subject of the Chief-of-General Staff’s annual exercise to be held at Burnham from May 30 to June 2 and June 9 to June 11, the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) said today. • Named "Exercise Waitara” it will set the theme for Regular and Territorial forces during the new training year. The exercise, attended by selected Regular and Territorial Force officers, will examine the problems of counter-insurgency in Southeast Asia, where New Zealand’s main defence commitments lie.
It will also include a study of the battle group formation which is the fighting unit within a pentropic division. (The pentropic division was part of last year’s study and has now been introduced as the fighting formation of the Australian zurny.) An indoor exercise, "Waitara” will consist of discussion and the study of problems likely to be faced by the New Zealand Army in an emergency The first phase of the ex-' ercise, lasting four days, will be attended by 139 selected junior officers of the Regular Force, including 24 officers of the Ist Battalion. New Zealand Regiment, at present in training at Burnham. The second phase of two days from June 9 will be attended by nearly 120 senior Regular and Territorial Force officers. Guests and observers dur-i ing the exercise are expected' to include Mr Eyre, representatives of other New Zealand armed services, and observers from Britain. Australia, and the United States. The exercise director will be the Chief of the General Staff (Major-General L. W Thornton) assisted by the senior general staff officer of the New Zealand Division (Colonel H. A. Purcell), the Director of Training (Lieu-tenant-Colonel F. Rennie), the Director of Infantry (Lieutenant-Colonel R. W K Ainae), Majors S R. Lewis. K. G. Miles and J Brooke, and Captain V. J Duley.
