WHAKATANE JOLTED
White Island In Eruption
(N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 5. Four sharp earth tremors, the worst felt in Whakatane for several years, rocked the central Bay of Plenty today. At the same time a thick cloud of smoke erupted from White Island, the sulphurous volcano 28 miles off the coast. The jolts were sufficient to set lights swinging. Startled residents telephoned the local newspaper to find out what had happened. The first tremor was felt at 930 a.m. The second, at 1.35 p.m„ was accompanied by a mushroom of steam from White Island which could be clearly seen from Whakatane. A severe jolt startled residents at 6.16 p.m. and the fourth jolt at 8 p.m. caused consternation among latenight shoppers. The tremors were all preceded by loud rumblings. No damage has been reported
