Although four of the nine horses in the £4OOO Sydney Pacers’ Derby Final, which will be run at Harold Park tonight, were bred in New ! Zealand, it seems as though the brilliant Sydney filly, , Sparkling Pearl, will dom- ! ina*e the race. 1 New Zealand-trained or ■ bred horses have won seven lof the last nine contests for | the Derby. Dignus, Blue, and 1 Sun Chief having won three ’of the last four. Blue and Sun Chief were both driven by J. D. Watts, who tonight will drive the Johnnv Globe —Cadenza colt. Tacloban. • which has drawn the second line. Mr H. S. Barry, of Auckland, will be renresented bjthe New Zealand Derby Stakes winner, Student Prince, and Havana Smoke, i both of which finished fourth j in their heats last week. Both ' were well beaten, their mile rates being almost three seconds slower than the 2min ;7 4-ssec returned by Sparkling Pearl, which will start at long odds-on. Don Ngaree was runner--up to- Soarkling Pearl last ' week with a mile rate of i2min S 3-ssec. The Midday ,'youngster has shown sound form in Sydney and he is tsecond favourite for tonight's I race.
