First W in For New Owner
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 4. The former New Zealandowned mare Woodlands Wonder won the First Lakemba Handicap at Canterbury. Woodlands Wonder (7-1) led throughout to beat Viola (5-1) by two lengths, with a long neck to Medal (7-1) third. Woodlands Wonder was bred in 1956 by the Woodlands Stud, which sold the filly to the New Zealand owner, Mr Duncan McFarlane. for 2350gns, at the 1958 Sydney sales. Woodlands Wonder, first named Apple Pie, was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her year, winning three races. When the New Zealand trainer, Arthur Didham, returned to the Dominion, he was advised by Mr McFarlane to offer all his racehorses for sale- in Sydney. The directors of Woodlands Stud lost no time bidding for the mare, and they secured her for 1300gns. Yesterday Woodlands Wonder was having her second start for her new owners, and she has won £570 in stakes.
