Gambol Pleases In Amberley Trial

Gambol, R. J. Skelton’s mount in the Starky Memorial at Amberley tomorrow, was one of the best of the trialists tested on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday.

Gambol, still a hack, beat the open class performer Omaha over six furlongs in smart time.

Gambol, ridden by T. McGill, led Omaha (N. Eastwood) by half a length and recorded Imin 16 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 l-ssec. They galloped about 20ft out from the rails and had good footing. Some of the early work was done in fog, and some of the Amberley candidates, including the Cup candidate Gabelle could not be timed. Gabelle’s stablemate Star Maiden (A. J. Stokes) sprinted half a mile With Toa (G. W. Mein) in 50 4-ssec. Star Maiden is one of the two-year-olds in the Novice Stakes at Amberley. She has drawn well, and has enough ability to reach one of the places. El Toro (M. J. Skelton) also recorded 50 4-&sec, in beating Picwyn (B. Collins) by three lengths. El Toro was an improver's sixth at the North Canterbury meeting last week and may take beating in the Novice Stakes at Amberley. Hullabaloo (R. B. Taggart) finished clear of Sumptuous (D. N. Hadfield), after half a mile, in the smart time of 49 4-ssec. Hullabaloo was one of the reserves for the Glasnevin Maiden Handicap at Amberley, but was scratched on Wednesday. Packwood (P. J. Kempton) was shading Surrend (Miss F. Kerr) after running a mile in Imin 44 l-ssec. They ran the first half briskly in 51 3-ssec. On Terms Golden Aureole (G. R. Baldwin) and Forsythe (M. Wildermoth) appeared to be fairly evenly matched in their mile gallop. They finished on terms in Imin 43 4-ssec, and quickened to run the last half in 51 i-ssec. Navarone (P. Graham) led his stablemate Offend <D. N. Hadfield) by a length fin idling a mile in Imin 45 3-ssec, the last half in 53 l-ssec. Waverley (N. Eastwood) and On Time (T. McGill) sprinted half a mile in 51 1-5 sec. Golden Howe (D. N. Hadfield) led Talkative (P. Graham) by a length ending a mile in Imin 48 3-ssec. They kept up a steady pace, running the last half-mile in 54 l-ssec. Prospero (N. Eastwood) loafed over a mile in Imin 50 2-ssec, though he quickened for the last half-mile i n ac Glorious Twelfth (P. J. Kempton) was two lengths clear of Pyrites (W. Beck) ending half a mile in 51 3-5 sec. New Owners Pyrites will do his future racing for Mr and Mrs H. C. Kidd, of Riccarton. He is now trained by G. R. Pelling. Kelp (B Collins) led his stablemate Royal Return (G. Baldwin) by half a length ending a mile in Imin 44 4-5 sec. They worked up to speed quickly and ran the first half-mile in 51sec. Herbs (K. Reggett) beat Riboflavin from the half-mile by three-quarters of a length in 51 3-ssec. Safe Harbour (D. N. Hadfield) kept up a strong gallop over six furlongs, run-

ning her last half-mile attractively in 50 2-ssec. In her present form she will take beating in the hack sprint at Amberley. Roman Maid did one of the most attractive sprint trials on the plough. Ridden by T. Wilson, she reeled off half a mile in 49 4-ssec, and had speed in reserve at the end. It was an attractive wind-ing-up trial for the Amberley Cup. Jimmy Hill (P. Graham) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 29 l-ssec, and finished a length behind his stablemate Francisco (Mrs V. Clutterbuck), which joined in for the final six furlongs. They could not be timed for the last half-mile because of the fog. King Lear (K. Reggett) led Balance (D. N. Hadfield) by a neck ending a mile in Imin 44 2-ssec. They ran the last half impressively in 50 4-ssec. It could have been a winning trial by King Lear for the Glasnevin Maiden Handicap at Amberley. This former North Islander led until close to home in the distance hack race at Riccarton last Saturday, then finished sixth. Brydone (G. W. Mein) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 30 2-ssec, the last three in 38 l-ssec. He has been racing solidly for thirds in his last three races and is one of the stronger form prospects for the Glasnevin Handicap at Amberley. Garbett (R. J. Blair) led Reclaim (J. L. Coulter) over eight trial steeplechase fences. Garbett opened up a lead of four or five lengths between the first and second fences, but Garbett reduced it about half way through a good display. They finished by jumping the brush double at good speed.
