CRICKET Second Attempt To Start Game Against Derbyshire
(NZ. Frett Arsoctattoru—Covvnpni)
CHESTERFIELD. May 4. A second attempt will be made today to start the Australian's second match of the tour, against Derbyshire. Heavy rain on Tuesday turned the Queen’s Park Oval into a lake yesterday and made play impossible. The umpires, after inspecting the pitch. and the groundsmen who worked on it all day, hope play can start on time this morning. The head groundsman, Mr Harold Graham, said the pitch should play slowly and probably would be similar to the one at Worcester.
Derbyshire is one of the most improved counties and has a strong all-round side
with a mixture of veterans and young players, all with fine performances in county cricket last season The Australian side in this match will depend a lot on the tour newcomers, particularly in the bowling, where A. Davidson is the only one with experience of English conditions. He will be supported by R. Gaunt who is hitting form and G. McKenzie, while L. Kline and I. Quick will form the spin attack. To support the experienced McDonald. Harvey and Burge in the batting are W. Lawry and B. Booth with Davidson and McKenzie batting six and seven.
