DRIFT TO TOWNS
Trend Shown In Census
Early results of the 1961 census show that some counties are continuing to lose population as a result of the drift from country areas to the towns, according to the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Inangahua County is among those where the population has declined since the 1956 census. Preliminary results, subject to amendment, are set out below. The 1956 figures are in parenthesis and the percentage change is also given. Eketahuna County, 1821 (1923). —53; Uawa County 1725 (1707). +1.05; Inangahua County, 3083 (3357), —8.16; Whangaroa County. 2312 (2503), —7.63; Pahiatua Borough. 2511 (2322), + 10.98; Ranfurly, 852; Southbridge, 477. Figures for county towns in the 1956 Census are not available because countytowns did not exist as such in that census.
