BELTS FOR SAFETY
Use In Cars Recommended
(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 4. The value of safety belts for occupants of motor-cars was emphasised at today’s meeting of the Road Safety Council, and the council decided to recommend their use. The chairman of the council’s motor vehicles committee (Mr A. W. Keyes) said the use of belts would have saved lives in three or four accidents this year. He displayed two types of belts, one similar to an aeroplane lap belt and the other which fastened over one shoulder. Each cost £5. Dr. S. J. Thompson (North Island motorists) said the lap belt was not broad enough to prevent an abdominal rupture in an accident. The council was shown a film, made by the University of California, of experiments in collisions. The collisions were at 30 miles an hour at right-angles, such as would occur at intersections. Slowmotion cameras showed the doors flying open and unbelted dummy occupants being thrown violently on to the road. Belted dummies suffered no “injuries.”
