REVERTED LAND LIMING
Assistance Scheme Discussed
Land with no record of previous liming which has reverted to scrub or native flora in spite of having been cultivated many years ago should qualify for lime transport assistance, the agriculture produce section of Federated Farmers decided at its quarterly meeting in Christchurch yesterday. This will be recommended to the Dominion council of the federation. At present, the qualifying conditions for assistance are that the land must be being cultivated for the first time or, if it is uncultivated, to have the lime applied from the air; it must be approved by the Department of Agriculture and must not have been limed previously. The assistance is only available for the first year, the secretary (Mr A. G. Dawson) explained to members. Discussion centred on the problem of reverted land which was being brought into production again. “I know of a lot of country with scrub and manuka 20 feet high which was ploughed, cropped and put into English pasture many years ago when the big estates were subdivided,” said Mr F. M. Henderson (Southland).
