RETIREMENT OF TRAINER

Mr W. Russell,

(N-Z Press Association) WANGANUI, May 3. A lifetime of active association with racing and trotting ended for Mr W. A ("Sandy") Russell this week when he handed over the keys of his Springvale property to Mr R. G. White, of Maxwell. Mr White will continue to use it as a training establishment. Mr Russell first took out a trainer's licence for trotting in 1925 and held it until 1935. The first horse he raceo was Straight Flush, a jumper, in 1923, but with little success. Mr Russell came to Wanganui in 1945 as a hotel licensee and he purchased the Springvale property, on the outskirts of the city. In 1948. Among the best horses Mr Russell has owned and raced are Jimmy Woodser, Brown Jester fwhich he considers the best), The Pro, The Bet. and Spuron, which he bred, himself.
