NEW CHRYSANTHEMUM AT FLOWER SHOW

A bowl of 36 blooms of Violet Queen, a chrysanthe-; mum imported from England,! was a major attraction at the first day of the chrysanthemum show* of the Canterbury Horticultural Society yesterday. R was exhibited by L. Clark, w r ho showed one of the blooms for the first time last year. The chrysanthemum has a slight, sweet scent, w’hich is more noticeable early in the morning. The reverse side of the petals has a silver and mauve colour. The standard of the exhibits w’-as w r ell up to that of other years, most of the judges commented. In some ! classes entries were lower, mainly, it was believed, because of the frosts which spoiled blooms intended for exhibiting. The high quality of some of the exhibits was attributed to the mild April, The show will finish today. Results were:— Premier Awards Large exhibition incurving: M. I Gordon.
