RAILWAY LINE CROSSINGS
Obligation On Drivers Vehicles carrying passengers for hire, except taxis, or those carrying explosives or inflammable Squids in bulk must stop and ensure that there are no trains coming before going across a level crossing, said the Christchurch traffic superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) yesterday. ‘‘This is a very important but little-known regulation." he said. He added that the Transport Act defined "bulk” as a quantity of 40 gallons or more.
All other vehicles must slow to 15 miles an hour when going-across a railway level crossing:—except where there was a compulsory stop sign, he said. Recently a truck carrying three or four 44-gallon drums of petrol was reported not to have stopped at a level crossing. he said. "In future, offenders will be liable for prosecution,” said Mr Kellar.
