Obituary MRS A. W. TYNDALL
The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mrs Frances Tyndall. She was 93. Born in Bluespur, Gabriel's Gully, in 1868, Mrs Tyndall lived in the district for the most part of the next 42 years, although her secondary education was received at Otago Girls’ High School, Dunedin. In recent years she became one of the oldest living pupils of the school. Married in 1889 to Mr A. W Tyndall, an Australianborn* teacher from Victoria, she later moved to Middlemarch, near Dunedin. In 1946, some years after her husband's death, she moved to Christchurch to live with two of her daughters on Cashmere Hills.
Mrs Tyndall took an active part in the work of the Patriotic Association in World War I and organised the collection of funds for gifts to’ New Zealand servicemen overseas.
She also worked for th" Presbyterian Church in the various districts where she lived during her lifetime, and was for many years organist and choirmistress at the Strath Taieri Church. As well as bringing up five children. Mrs Tyndall was interested in gardening, reading and embroidery. During the last few years she led a quiet life and took a keen interest in keeping up to date with world affairs. Her sight was good at the time of her death.
Mrs Tyndall is survived by her five children. Sir Arthur Tyndall. Judge of the Court of Arbitration, Miss Nesta Tyndall, formerly infant advisor for the Canterbury Education Board. Mrs C. Richards, of Waimate. Mr Edward Tyndall, a former Chief Postmaster at Palmerston North ,and Miss R. F C Tyndall, retiring principal of the Christchurch Girls’ High School.
