Air Pollution
Sir,—We constantly hear of the findings of research abroad. Professor Hedley Atkins, Simms Commonwealth Travelling Professor for 1961, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, London Institute, and a member of the executive council of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, reports on the undoubted causes of cancer. What provision is made for their prevention in our smogthreatened city? Is any planning for health and preservation of blue skies undertaken in city lay-out or zoning schemes? If lung cancer is attributed to cigarette smoking and atmospheric pollution, what is cigarette smoke but air pollution? Irritant fumes are permitted in hospitals, public buildings, and conveyances. In dining premises and food stores, food, staff and customers are engulfed indiscriminately in the fumes of the noxious weed. Offensive chimneys and ground-burnt rubbish continue their uninhibited quota of pollution.—Yours, etc, CIVIC AIMS? May 2, 1961.
