City Council Vacancy
Sir,—l wish to state the views of my five workroom mates on the proposed byelection. They are all for a local Labour candidate who can freely give to the council and its many committees the full time that such an elected position demands; but like very many other Labour supporters, they will definitely vote against their party if a member of Parliament is nominated. We believe that, in these days, a member of Parliament, if he is loyal to his constituents and his election pledges, cannot possibly fulfil satisfactorily his many City Council duties, with Parliament in session for six months each year. Messrs Stillwell, Christie and Denton were only narrowly defeated. They all have the time and experience to give to the .city, and they should be given preference before Messrs Macfarlane or Connelly.—Yours, etc., FIVE STAUNCH LABOURITES. May 2, 1961.
