HIGHWAY TO TUNNEL

Roads Board Sees Project Members of the National Roads Board yesterday sawwork on the approach to the Christchurch-Lyttelton road tunnel for which the board has assumed responsibility, and had the proposals explained to them. The board's section of th* construction is about two miles and a half from Ferryroad to the Road Tunnel Authority’s boundary, which is about 15 chains from the Heathcote portal. The roadway has been designed to motorway standards, with a formation width of 45ft As well as the actual roadway, there will be a bridge over the Heathcote river, an overbridge at the railway, a two-lane underpass at Port Hills road and Horotane Valley road, and a aingle-lane underpass at the Lyttelton Borough Council's reservoir on the hill above the road.
