Higher Levies Sought For Wheat Research
Wheatgrowers, millers, and bakers are to be asked to pay more towards the work of the Wheat Research Institute, and the Government is to be ; asked to raise the maximum levy that can be charged. ■ This was decided yesterday ■ at a meeting of the Wheat ' Research Committee. Growers, millers, and : bakers pay 4d a ton of flour or 50 bushels of wheat as ‘ their levy towards the insti--1 tute’s work. The committee is to ask them if they will be prepared ' to pay sd. ’ The institute's work is fin--1 anced half by the levies and ’ half by the Government. ’ Outlining the reasons for the higher levy at yesterday’s meeting, the director of the 1 institute (Mr E. W. Hullett) ■ said: “This year we are living = on reserves in the current ac- - count.” Higher levies would give ? the institute £B5O more a s year in its deposit account, ? he said. > “This is one of the smaller
branches of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, but we are trying to keep up with a very wide ■ field.” i Growth of knowledge in the field meant more staff ■ was needed. ! “We have just got to expand in the long run. DeI mands on us are increasing. ■ Our problem is to get people. ; We have to make the jobs . attractive. “There is a danger of small : places like this going out of 1 existence,” he said. Before a higher levy can be . charged the committee must I get regulations changed. The committee decided to r ask the Government to raise 5 the maximum levy to 6d.
