DRAW FOR YONKERS
N.Z. Entrants Outside (N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 1. The Australian and New Zealand horses competing in the international pacing series at Yonkers Raceway drew outside positions today for the first race on Thursday. False Step, of New Zealand. drew No. 5 position. Arania. of New Zealand. No 6. and Apmat. of Australia. No. 8 in the eight-horse race
The former New Zealand pacer Caduceus, now running for an American syndicate. drew the inside position.
The top American representative. Bye Bye Byrd, drew No. 3. and immediately was made favourite at 2'l. The Australian and New Zealand owners and drivers were disappointed with the positions their horses drew but dsimissed the disadvantage of an outside position as “the luck of the draw." Mr Morrie Anderson, the owner of Apmat. said: ‘'We’ll have to be lucky to win it from the outside. We'll just have to wait and see.” Mr Anderson and Mr Roy McKenzie, the owner of Arania, arrived in New York at the week-end. Mr James Smyth. the owner of False Step, has been in New York for several weeks.
False Step was regarded by the Yonkers odds-maker as the greatest threat amongst the Australian and New Zealand horses and was quoted at 9 to 2. Apmat was quoted at 8 to 1 and Arania at 10 to 1. Other horses in the field are Mr Budlong (3 to I>. O’Brien Hanover <2O to I)
and Tar Boy <6 to 1). Al three are American horses.
Eqjry in the International Pace is by invitation and the Yonkers management decided that none of the Canadian horses being prepared for the series was ready for this I race.
