MATERIALS FOR HUT

Helicopter Used By Club To transport building materials to the head of the Waimakariri valley for a new alpine hut, a helicopter was used by the Canterbury Mountaineering Club last week. The new hut is to be built at the Waimakariri Falls, which is about a 10 hours' tramp from the Waimakariri road bridge at Bealey corner. It will be a base for elimbs of Mounts Rolleston. Carrington. Armstrong, and other peaks. Seven trips were required by the helicopter to take all the materials to the site. The helicopter was also used by the New Zealand Forest Service to transport materials for a new hut which it is building near the present Carrington hut, at the junction of the White and Waimakariri rivers. The airlift has saved manydays of hard packing by club members, over difficult terrain. Work on building the hut will begin next spring The new hut will replace an old bivouac near the Waimakariri Falls owned by the New Zealand Alpine Club. Of similar design to the Empress hut at the head of the Hooker Valley, Mount Cook, the new hut will accommodate six persons.
