Men’s Basketball LOW-SCORING MATCHES
Second Round In Senior Grade Low scoring was prevalent In the second round of the men's A grade basketball played last evening. Lack of match practice at this early stage of the season could account for this. At present the only two unbeaten teams are Rex A and BG.H. A. with L.D.S. and University A having one win and one drawn game to their credit. Results of matches last night were:— 43, Teachers' College B.G.H. A 30. Wlgram 18. University A 14. L.D.S. 14. Rex A 38, Ist N.Z. Regiment 28. Y-Boys v. Teachers’ College Y-Boys. with superior courtplay on attack, and fielding a tight sone defence, proved to be too much for Teachers' College. College was harassed Into longish set shots for most of the game, and tn the first half, there was solid, if not spectacular play by Y-Boys. However, the tempo of play was stepped up considerably In the second half, and College could find no counter to the fast-moving Harley, Ewing and Soley. For College. Bidulph scored some nice long baskets, and M. Talaroa displayed good ball control, and with Stewart, formed the spearhead of the College attack.
Scoring for Y-Boys. Harley netted 18 points. Ewing 8, and Pollett and Soley, 6 each, while Stewart 12. Bidulph 8. and Taiaroa 7. scored the College points. B.G.H. A v. Wigram This was a clean, fast-moving game, in which B.G.H. beat Wlgram by 30 points to 18. Entwistle, at centre, controlled the game for B.G.H. and fed Mac Kay, and Burnley, who was cutting well under the basket. Wlgram lost several Opportunities for scoring, by bringing the ball up the court too slowly, when players like Tunnicliffe, a hard-driving centre, and de Felice, a very fast-moving shoot, should have been given more opportunities Brittman. Ellison and Thomson, H also played solidly for Scorers for B.G.H. were Brittman (8). Entwistle (8). MacKav (8). Bumby and Ellison <4 each), and Thomson (2). For Wlgram, Tunnicliffe scored 8. de Felice 4. Bach 4. Barson and Belcher, 2 each. University v. L.D.S. This was a thrilling game In which a very hard man-to-man defence dominated the trend of Play. University bustled L.D.S. into minor errors early, but the Mormon players were much more settled in the second half. Smith, playing at centre for University, was the outstanding man on the court, and he controlled every aspect of University’s game, from fast-moving breaks to switching on defence. The high quality of defence by both teams in this match had its effect on the shooting, the final score being 14 each. For University Smith and Morris each netted 4, and Young and Wardholmes 2 each, while Lang 6. Little 4, and Hammond 4 scored for L.D.S. Rex A v. Ist N.Z. Regiment Neat ball control, and general courtplay, gave Rex a slight edge Over the Ist N.Z. Regiment in the final game. There were few fast breaks for the greater part of this match, although In the later stages, both teams opened up and scored freely. West and Ward for Rex. took the rebounds nicely, both on attack and defence. and they fed Berzine and Harbott well. For the Regiment. Paipa played honestly, and Burit was in form, scoring 14 points for hia side. Ihaka scored 8. Paipa 4. Ward and Sandford 2 each. Scorers for Rex were Berzine (10). West (8). Ward. Fox and Harbott (6 each). Results of senior reserve games were B.G.H. B 31, University B 2J. B.G.H C 32. Rex B 20. Ist N.Z. Regiment B 11, Stars A 14 Jniverslty C 31, MIA. 45.
