No Pay During Flight

(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) CAPE CANAVERAL, May 2. The United States’ first astronaut will receive no “flight pay" from the Government for the time he hurtles through space. But the personal story of his experience will bring him more than 70,000 dollars. The seven astronauts have received only the regular pay given to officers of their rank since they volunteered for the space programme. Last August “Life” magazine said it had signed contracts with the seven for exclusive rights to publish the personal stories of their experiences. It paid 500,000 dollars to be divided equally among the men.
