AMBERLEY HURDLES ENTRANTS SCHOOL

Riecarton’s three representatives in the hurdles at Amberley on Saturday schooled in company at Rieearton yesterday. Plassowa (T. Wilson) jumped six hurdles, the first four with Balance (N. Cowles) and Packwood (J. L. Coulter). Some of Plassowa's jumping was brilliant, but he tired near the end. Packwood dropped behind for a start, and Plassowa gained a slight lead with a faster leap than Balance at the first flight. Packwood drew level by taking the inside running on one of the bends after jumping the second hurdle, and the three horses went to the third jump on terms. Packwood and Balance pulled out after four flights The pace had been fairly brisk for this round, and Plassowa was showing signs of tiredness as he jumped the last two hurdles alone Packwood was runner-up to Promise over hurdles a' Rieearton at Easter, and on that run be will orobably be favourite at Amberley.

The course proper about 20ft was open for galloping and some of the early work was done in tog. Her Ex (A H. Eastwood) recorded one of the best sprints for those that could be timed. She ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec. and appeared to do the job well Omaha (N Eastwood) followed in 53 4-ssec. Corowa <G R Baldwin* and Royal Return (T. Wilson) were paired over a mile They started briskly to run the opening half-mile in 51

3-ssec. They finished the mile in Imin 46 2-ssec, on terms. Corowa could take beating in the Starky Memorial, the second leg of the double at Amberley. He is one of the light-weights and probably one of the improvers. Last Saturday he finished brilliantly for fifth over seven furlongs at the North Canterbury meeting. Waverley (N Eastwood) led Pyrites <P J Kempton) and Glorious Twelfth (A. J Stokes) finishing half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Waverley. one of I. McClure’s team, went very keenly On the plough, Francisco (Mrs V Clutterbuck) sprinted the last three of five furlongs in 37 3-ssec. Polly Alonso (N. Eastwood), which will race at Ashburton, recorded 39 3-ssec for three furlongs.
