RANDOM REMINDER
CHOLMONDELEY.
If a Christchurch man gets into a Wellington taxi and asks to be ' driven to Marjoribanks Street, and uses the correct pronunciation of Marchbanks, the driver is likely to fix him with a belligerent eye and say "You mean Marjorie Banks” as if it was the name of a film star. But down here in Christchurch, tl>e cultured South, everyone knows how what we call Chumley Home is really spelt But what’s far more important they know in Christchurch the valuable work the home has done over very many years in bringing health and happiness to kiddies who need it. Tomorrow, jvhen those eager collectors, the students make their annual capping day appeal, is the oppor-
tunity for all Christchurch people (those who approve of students’ goings-on and those who view them with alarm or faint surprise) to make a tangible recognition of the work that has been and is being done over at the beautiful site in Governor’s Bay. When the welfare state first arrived, many people thought that the issue of a monetary hand-out would automatically solve the problem of parents in distress and the proper care of children so necessary during the period of family adjustment. Now we know better, and over the last few years there has been a growing realisation of what has been achieved and of just how much a place such as Cholmondeley Home means to those kiddies
who go there. Hundreds of kiddies have benefited over the years and even those people who try to steer clear of street collections will know that tomorrow is obviously an exception. The student collectors are mostly hardy vigorous types. They will not cavil at having to carry boxes heavily weighed down with silver—although those who feel the weight is a bit much, might care to make a contribution in paper money, which weighs less, as a lot easier to carry. And the students won’t really mind if you pronounce the name wrong, so long as the donation comes. It is a time for cheerful giving, and there is every reason for some of that well-known Christchurch generosity tomorrow.
