IGNORANCE OF WHITES
Attitudes In S. Africa (NiJPA.-Reuter) JOHANNESBURG. The ignorance of white South Africans about the African workers in their factories and homes is an absolute disgrace, Mr P. Becker, an expert on African cultures, told a conference of the National Development Foundation. ‘We have been working with the Africans for years," he said. “Iffie European must understand his frustrations and sympathise with his linsUtioas. “The White man is so used to employing the African as cheap labour that he has troubled neither to understand his background nor to learn his language. It is the black man who is thus forced to make the adjustment in the relationship with his employer.
“The urban African has Journeyed far along the road to evolution but he is still pulled by the tribal gods.” Mr Becker described this as the dualism in the African outlook.
He disagreed that the African was naturally indolent In his own tribal community he worked at a steady pace to provide the basic heeds of his family.
