The Economy
Sir.—Economists, who apparently are taking over full responsibility for the Government's economic commitments, in spite of Mr Holyoake's denial, are obviously going to make the country’s accounts balance before joining the World Bank. The social security amenities, according to reports, will be thrown overboard, such as milk for school children, money for crippled children’s artificial limbs, free medicines to be overhauled, big reduction in home-building, and a repetition of the credit squeeze, all of which will politically, put New Zealand back 50 years to the doldrums. Economists naturally think in terms of figures and balances, with little heed for people’s wants and human rights. The final disaster-will be handing New Zealand over to overseas capitalists, through the World Bank, The Government has plenty of money for an unnecessary new frigate and £40,000,000 to spend on defence (nonproductive;).—Yours, etc..
