Erin’s Castle In Flying Handicap
Mataura trainer, D. Todd, his second win for the night when he gained a narrow bnt impressive win in a keen finish to the Flying Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. Erin's Castle was checked at the start and had little in his favour in the running. He improved to join the pacemaker, Raven Dew, with two and a half furlongs to I run. He was a clear leader I into the straight, with Raven !Dew just ahead of Zany and : Bonnie Lustre. while Schnapps was trying hard to work clear not far away. Erin's Castle was hotly I challenged inside the furlong but lasted long enough to win by a head in a splendid finish. Bonnie Lustre was never far away, but was awkwardly placed from the two furlongs. She came home in grand style, as did Zany, which finished a head behind her. Zany’s effort was a good one and she should soon make amends. Schnapps, too, finished fast in the straight and he was a head back fourth, a length and a half in front of the tiring Raven Dew. which should be improved by the race. Takitimu made up ground for sixth after losing a handy position in the middle stages, with Blue Emperor and Banjo next, clear of Queenson. Lavengio galloped out and checked Erin’s Castle and Schnapps at the start and Fyvie Queen lost ground, Caliunite Overdue Calumite gained an overdue win when he outfinished Silvester in the Beach Handicap. He was fortunate to escape trouble when Johnny Thunder broke at the end of a furlong. Young Conga took the lead with five and a half furlongs to run. Thunderbolt taking over at the three furlongs. Halt a furlong later Silvester rushed clear, being . followed into the straight by Calumite and Thunderbolt. with three lengths to Dither Bessie Brigade. Sanfarer and Latest. Calumite was pulled out to challenge inside the furlong and he finished boldly to win decisively. Silversted was unchallenged for second, being four lengths in front of Latest, which was slow away and did well to finish in the money. Thunderbolt tired to fourth, ahead of Hydro Boy. Sanfarer. Dither and Bessie Brigade. Jockles lost his chance at the start.
Grand Effort
Tarseal gave a grand exhibition of trotting to win the Dunedin Handicap. He raced three wide from the 10 furlongs until five and a halt furlongs from the finish where he worked to the lead. Tarseal turned for hotne a length and a half in front of Superway and Our Jimmy, with a length and a half to Catapult, which was clear of At-
tract and Procrastinator. Tarseal did not look like being tested and he won easily by two lengths. Our Jimmy had every chance, out he broke for a stride or two at the straight entrance. Even so. it is doubtful whether he would have caught the winner. Catapult made up ground in the straight for third a short length behind Our Jimmy and a length in front of Procrastinator. Superway tired to fifth, ahead of Ahumai, which lost a handy position in the middle stages. Attract and Kaboon. Surprise Win Young Kim, which was noted more for his deeds as a sprinter, upset calculations with a win in the two-mile Domain Handicap. Guest Star rushed to the front at the end of two and a half furlongs with Young Kim trailing him. , Young Kim was a length and a half behind Guest Star at the straight entrance, with No Charge, Yare, Dither, Calumite Thunderbolt and Latest handiest of the others. Guest Star was soon in trouble and Young Kim took over. He ran on stoutly to win by a length and a half. Calumite. after breaking badly at the start and being last in the middle stages, received a good run through the field and he took second place half a length in front of another slow beginner in Latest. Dither Went a surprisinglngly good race for fourth a length back, shading Yare, which had his chance, and the tiring favourite. Guest Star. No charge was right up. clear of Thunderbolt and Peat Moss. Smart Trotter Flying Paddy, a four-year-old by Flying Song from Relentless. the dam also of Flying Note, gave a sound display of trotting to win the Bayfield Handicap. K. Balloch had him handily placed all the way and he followed Rest Assured, John Black and Spotless into the straight, with Catapult and Fallacious the only other with a chance. Flying Paddy passed the leaders with apparent ease and won handily by two lengths from Rest Assured, which held on gamely after leading over the last mile. Spotless had every chance and was half a head back third, beating the fast-finishing Fallacious the onlv others with a was a length back fifth, clear of John Black, with Bandsaw and Hindu next, well ahead of the remainder. John Black, a firm favourite, broke at the start. He moved up imartly in the middle stages, but pulled hard, leaving him with nothing in reserve in the straight. Division Race Guineas and Worthy River won the divisions of the St Clair Handicap. Guiness outclassing the field in his dlvtaiosj. Guiness received the run of the race In the middle stage* of iff* divtalon after he had led for half • mile. He took the lead from Mannequin Parade on straightening up and he did not have to be driven out to win by a conservative two lengths. Lady Ngutree, after covering extra ground, finished on for second, half a length in front of Wortliy FUcta. which shaded; Whlpaway. Mannequin Parade and Adios Duenna, with Morsel next. Idleman went away to a big lead ia the early stages of the second division, but He was beaten three furlongs out. Worthy River was pushed back in the middle stages, but he
