Tulloch Wins Record Stakes
ADELAIDE, April 30. The New Zealand-bred Tulloch became the first horse to win more than £lOO,OOO in stakes in AusWalia when he won the Pullman Select Stakes over a mile and a half at Cheltenham yesterday. A crowd of 30,000 gave the champion a warm reception as he returned to scale. Tulloch, starting at 7-1 on, beat the Adelaide Cup fancy, Vice Master. 33-1, by four lengths, with Rose of Summer, 14-1, a .length away third. Tulloch has now won £100,358 10s in prize-mopey.
He has contested 51 races for 34 wins, 12 seconds and four thirds. His only unplaced effort was in last year’s Melbotirne Cup won by the New Zealand mare Hi-Jinx. Tulloch’s presence in the field robbed the race of any betting interest. He opened at 10-1 on, but surprisingly several bookmakers dropped him to 8-1 on and at one stage a leading rails fielder had him 6-1 on. At this price two backers laid £BOO to £5O on the champion. Tulloch was forced to race two wide for most of the way, and was three wide near
the half-mile. However, his class saw him overcome these disadvantages and surge to the front soon after turning for home.
He was not ridden right out by W. Pyers, and coasted to the line with something in hand. His time of 2min 31 l-10sec was disappointing, but the string was out of the ground and the pace for the first halfmile was dawdling. Tulloch will leave for Sydney next Friday, and after a short rest will go on to Brisbane, where he is to contest the weight-for-age O’Shea Stakes and Brisbane Cup in June.
