TROTTING FORBURY FIRST LEG TO QUEEN NGAIO
Third Win Of Season In Winter Handicap Queen Ngaio followed up some consistently sound efforts to gain her third win for the season when she outfinished a useful field in the Winter'Handicap, *the first leg of the double on the opening night of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting. ? ' F. E. Newfield had Queen Ngaio handily placed all the way after she had led for the first three furlongs. She raced clear near the furlong post and did not look like being caught.
Raced by Messrs K. and L. Brosnan, of Fernside, Queen Ngaio is a six-year-old mare by Light Brigade from Heather Globe. She has seldom paced a bad race this season and with a little luck her record would have been much better. She is racing more keenly than earlier in the season, and, although her opportunities will be restricted, she could easily win again before the end of the month. Aquaplane was not disgraced when beaten into second pla«e; nor was the third hone. Vanity Scott. Aquaplane was checked at the start and raced wide from the six furlongs until he joined Gildireet in front near the two furlonga. Vanity Scott had fir from a troublefree run and there was merit in her effort. She was late working clear and by the time she was In the open Queen Ngaio had established a winning break. Newfield had another winner, being successful with Guineas. With a little luck he could have won with S'hnapps, Which was fourth in the Flying Handican. The second leg, the Renown Handicap, resulted in a good win for Cardigan Bay, a stablemate of Erin's Castle, winner of the Flying Handicap. Cardigan Bay finished boldly from a handy position to beat Johnny Dean and Meadow Scott The successful combination paid £54 8s for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather before a good crowd. The track was fast, but the racing was rough. Totalisator investments oncourse amounted to £72,221 ss. including £7B(M 15s on the double. compared with £55.178 5s last year when the club raced in the daytime. Off-course investments amounted to £83.635. compared with £43,562 10s. Queen Ngaio's Win Light Mood. Zenith and Robert Dillon lost ground at the start of the Dunedin Handicap, with Aquaplane receiving a check which knocked him well towards the rear. Queen Ngaio was first out, but at the end of three furlongs Mighty Loyal worked clear. He set a fairly easy pace, with the field packing • up near the six furlongs. Aquaplane improved wide out, -with GUdirect also making a run. Zany met trouble inside the last half-mile and in the mix-up Highland Heath and Zenith were checked. GUdirect and Aquaplane worked to the front with two and a-hdf furlongs left. Aquaplane led Frown into the straight, with Mighty Loyal and Gildireet tiring next, ahead of Gay Baron (wide). Queen Ngaio. Waitaki Child and Kingsdown Patch, with Vanity Scott blocked for room. Queen Ngaio quickly established a winning break. She was kept going over the last 100 yards and won by two and a half lengths from Aquaplane. Vanity Scott came home fast for third a length and a half back, a length in front of Waitaki Child, which came home fast. Frown made no impression in the straight and was half a length back fifth, with Highland Heath making up a lot of ground for sixth ahead of Gav Baron and Kingsdown Patch, which was clear of Mighty Loyal. Second Leg The Mataura four-year-old. Cardigan Bay. gained an impressive win in the Renown • Handicap, the second leg of the double. Lucks Way forced most of the pace, Oreti passing him with three furlongs left. Half a furlong later Abu Simbel tangled, checking Medoro Star Meadow Scott, which had been three wide in the middle stages, was on the outside of Oreti racing to the straight, with Cardigan Bay next on the outside of Johnny Dean, followed by Medoro Star, Marr Mavis and Falsehood. Cardigan Bay was shading Meadow Scott inside the furlong and he finished full of running to win by a length. Johnny Dean had trouble working clear and he finished fast to take second place a nose in front of Meadow Scott with two lengths to a fast finisher in Master Alan, and half a length to Medoro Star, which was followed by Oreti, Mary Mavis and Falsehood. Galley, Joylyn, and Fire Bell gave ground at the start. Results:— BAYFIELD RANIMCAP. Of £400: trotters; tain ilsee class; one mile and five furlongs 2/i n rao paddy «) r.
