DANNEVIRKE, April 30. R. R. Newdick, of Auckland, going out tor the final round with a two-stroke lead over S. G. Jones, gave the remainder of the field in the North Island amateur golf championship at Dannevirke little chance when be completed the first nine in 32. four under scratch today. He came home fn scratch 35 to return a card of 67, the best of the tournament, and retain his title for the third successive year with an aggregate of 578. His win also gave him the Hawke’s Bay and Southern Hawke’s Bay stroke cbampionshipe. Yesterday’s leader, S- G. Jones (Hastings), after initial rounds of 68 and 70. was unable to find touch on the drying greens today. He scored 74 and 73 for an aggregate of 286, eight behind Newdick.
R. B. Bailey, of Dannevirke could not repeat his second round performance of 68 and today turned in a 74 and a 71 for a 287 total. John Durry, of Wellington, after a disastrous 77 first round yesterday morning, came back into the picture in the afternoon with an excellent 68. but failed to capitalise today, having rounds of 74 and 70, and finishing 11 strokes behind the winner. W. J. Godfrey (Auckland). F. T. Gordon (Hastings). 5. Pease (Eltham) and R. C. Murray (Christchurch), were rarely far behind the leaders with totals of 291, 293. and the latter pair both on 294.
Galleries swelled this afternoon and in perfect weather an estimated 1000 watched the leaders in their concluding rounds.
