UNDER-20 MATCH

Canterbury,

Otago Draw

(from Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, April 30. After appearing to have the game well under control, Canterbury’s under-20 Soccer representatives had to concede a two-all draw in Otago in the first ot this j season’s Ruddiman Cup 'matches in Dunedin yesterday. ; Canterbury’s defence was faced with a speedy Otago forward line, and one which had evidently been wellcoached in control. A little more care taken in shooting for goal would have increased Canterbury’s score and on the whole the forwards did not do justice to their very capable defence. Hie teams were:— Canterbury.—D. Chapman; A -Westwood, M. Rennell; W. Young, W. McKenna, I. ‘Baby; J. Feringa, C. Davidson, C. Hicks, D. Torkington, B. Sayers. i Otago.—l. Graves; L. Roblertx R. McSkimming; M. > McKenzie, D. Toner, D. Jay; ‘R./Elmes, B. Boomer. T. Porteous. D. Connor, J. Little. Chapman was very safe in ,goal for Canterbury, and continued the fine form I which he has shown in club and trials this season. In front of him the half-back line ot Young, Mc- . Kenna and Laby was outstanding. Young, in particular. played a very constructive game, and his distribution gave his forwards every : chance.

Feringa on the right wing showed his usual determination and dash, but the inside forwards were a* little 'too hasty in their shooting Torkington scared one very fine goal, but could have had another, a much easier one, had he taken more care. Roberts at right back and Boomer at inside-right were the best players in a solid Otago team. The half-backs were not as efficient, and , Canterbury bad several chances owing to their

errors. Hicks and Torkington scored for Canterbury, and Otago's goals were scored by Boomer and Porteous. : Mr R. McDonald was the referee. <
