Thi* is one of * series of trial* to choose the New Zealand team to oppose the English tourists in two matches early next month. j The team is:— J. Callaghan (Canterbury); 1 D. Simmonds (Canterbury), ’ P. Frost (Canterbury) D. 1 Downie (Otago), J. Ferguson ‘ (Otago), P. McFarlane (Otago, captain); W. Berry (Otago), B. Stewart (Nelson). E. Charlton (Canterbury), D. McVey (Otago). C. Steele (Southland). P. Kennel! (Canterbury) 1* reserve. | The selectors, althougn waiting until after Saturi day’s match between Canterbury and Otago before an•nouncing their side, obviously had some firm ideas on the inclusion of several i player*. This is seen in the choice of Callaghan and Chartton. two 1960 New Zealand representatives who did not do well on Saturday. Simmonds and Frost, although normally half-backs. ■ have been chosen for the i full-back positions. Frost made a success of the left- ! back job on Saturday, and i'New Zealand is short of • good full-backs. Simmonds ! ii* a good centre-half, but the ..selectors have preferred to i keep together the Otago r half-back line which was so r impressive on Saturday.
