Irwin Leaving Christchurch
The All Black front row forward, M. W. Irwin, will leave Christchurch this week to take up a position as a house surgeon either at Auckland or Gisborne. Irwin has played only three games for University in Christchurch Rugby but has impressed as one of the best front-row forwards seen in Christchurch for some years. His departure will’ not
weaken the strong University pack to any great extent for in two of the three games played so far, C. R. Hockley, a Canterbury prop, has been an emergency for University and he will now have a regular place in the team. Irwin’s departure, although unfortunate, will at least help solve some of the promlems facing the Canterbury forward selector (Mr P. K. Rhind) for he would have had to choose between Irwin. J. Le Lievre and M. W. Allen, both of whom played for the Rest against New Zealand last year, and two other Canterbury representatives, C. A. Hockley and B. R. Mann, for two men for the Canterbury front row.
