New Look For Many Cities In U.S.
[United States Injormation Service! WASHINGTON, 'JHE look of many American cities their downtown areas in particular —is being drastically revised. Civic leaders are making a determined effort to bring back to their communities the vigour and energy which followed middleclass citizens to the suburbs.
With the Federal Government paying two-thirds of the cost, cities are clearing sites, relocating displaced persons, and selling land for private development. the most popular redevelopment plans include shopping malls closed to all but pedestrian traffic high-rising buildings set off by landscaped areas, adequate garaging of motor-cars, and ex-press-ways to move traffic into, and within, the city. The enthusiasm of the townspeople of Kalamazoo, Michigan, for their trafficfree shopping mall has not abated since the opening day. Kalamazoo is not the only place with such ideas—there are similar plans in 1000 communities in the United States, and about 650 projects are actually in process in more than 400 cities.
