LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL
Description Ry Dean The majesty of the Liverpool Cathedral was described by the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) in a talk to a recent meeting of the Friends of the Christchurch Cathedral Association. The Liverpool Cathedral was so vast that he did not see the upper walls and ceiling until Christmas Day when it was specially lighted for television, he said. The huge red sandstone cathedral cost £2j million to build and the architect, aged 22. was a descendant of the architect of the Christchurch Cathedral. The organ, one of the best in England, had five manuals and 9000 pipes, he said. At Christmas small choir boys carry to the altar little Christmas trees lighted by batteries, which made a most impressive sight Dean Sullivan, who was on an exchange visit to the Liverpool Cathedral, said he found preaching there difficult at first as he felt so far removed from the congregation in the vast church. After preaching at St. Paul’s Cathedral. London, Dean Sullivan was most surprised to be offered half a bottle of sherry and a cheque for £2 10s. This was. apparently, an old custom in expressing appreciation to a visiting preacher. The Dean also preached at St Martins-in-the-Fields and at the Temple Church. London. where judges and barristers comprised most of the congregation.
After his address, the Deen showed a film of Hong Kong, which showed the plight of refugees, their miserable dwelling conditions and aspects of their everyday life. The film was produced by the National Council of Churches.
