Young People Join Save The Children Fund
A new sub-branch of the Save the Children Fund, comprising young people, was welcomed at a meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the fund yesterday. Their representative, Mr S. Acland, offered the services of the young people wherever they were needed. Reports were presented by Mesdames G. Fairweather and M. B. Warren on the recent New Zealand annual meeting of the fund. The highlight of that meeting had been the attendance of the
director-general, Brigadier T. W. Boyce, they said. Since then a letter had been received from him thanking New Zealanders for their warm hospitality. A letter had also been received from the chairman of the headquarters council (Sir John Troutbeck) thanking the New Zealand Save the Children Fund for its support, the meeting was told. Need for Help It was clear from the annual meeting that the need for help was greater than ever, and an urgent appeal was sent out to those who had not responded to the cry of thousands of children, said the president (Miss M. G. HavelaSr).
Children in Hong Kong and Korea had been speciallv committed to New Zealand’s care by Brigadier Bovce, but refugees and unfortunate children all over the world also needed help.
The winter work of the North Canterbury branch was now under way. said Miss Hdvelaar. Wool was now available for knitting garments for children for their next winter.
"Now that our own winter Is upon us. we make a special anpeal for help for those less fortunate.” said Miss Havelaar.
