Minister Hints At Increases (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. April 28. A hint that the Cabinet was considering alterations In the charges made by the Poet Office was given by the Postmaater-General (Mr Hayman) at the annual meeting of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce last night Mr Hayman said the department was facing a real problem in finding sufficient finance for the operation of the Post Office and he could see no alternative but to make.drastic changes in the charges. No effort hod been made in the last few years to reduce the department debts. Surpluses had not been credited to the department's capital accounts, but had pone into the Consolidated Fund. The decision to establish a cable manufacturing business in New Zealand would cost the department £300,000 extra for the same cable in the next 12 months. This was one of the problems facing the department The Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) said in Auckland today that he had invited the Post Office to submit to the Economic Sub-Committee of the Cabinet proposals for higher charges.
