NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA

15 Christchurch Members Fifteen persons from Christchurch have been selected as members of the National Youth Orchestra this year. The orchestra, which totals 96. will assemble in Wellington early in May for a week's rehearsals. It will give a public concert in Lower Hutt on September 7, and in Wellington on September 8.

The conductor will be Mr John Hopkins, conductor of the National Orchestra, and sectional rehearsals will be taken- by Mr W. H. Walden Mills, musical adviser to schools in the Education Department: Mr John Ritchie, of Christchurch; and Mr Gordon Webb. trumpeter with the National Orchestra. The leader will be Michael Mclntyre, of Dunedin. Auditions were held throughout New Zealand and the members were selected by Mr Hopkins, Mr Walden Mills and Mr Ashley Heenan, musical assistant to the conductor of the National Orchestra. The Youth Orchestra committee is Mr M. J. Glubb, concert manager (chairman), Mr M. A. Rickard, head of music; Mr W. B. Harris, supervisor of teaching aids in the Education Department: and Mr Walden Mills.

The Christchurch members will be:—First violins, Robin Perks (Sumner), Marjorie Dumbleton ißiccarton); second violins. Miss K. W. Evans (St. Martins), Malcolm Mackie (Riccarton); 'cellos, Brian Sandle (New Brighton), Mary Williams (Papanui); bass, Gerald Newson (Huntsbury); flute, Evelyn Frank (Merivale); clarinets, Roland Sussex (Fendalton), Miss P. J. Drain (Papanui); oboes, B. E. McCahon (Papanui), K. J. Sayers (Burwood); trumpet, K. D. Martin (Wainoni); trombone, R. C. Wrighton (Burwood); tuba, Warwick Slinn (Papanui). In addition, the eight trainees with the National Orchestra—including Angela Connal and Sheila Riches, of Christchurch—will be members, to give other young musicians the benefit of their experience in orchestral playing.
