Cyclists

Sir, —May I suggest that the City Council bring down a by-law making it an offence for cyclists to ride two or more abreast on our city streets, in this age of increasingly heavy traffic? Riding single file would, I feel, make the cyclist feel safe, and consequently he would be safe. Motorists passing cyclists in single file would feel more harmonious, too. Two people riding abreast, deep in cohversation, are likely to pay more attention to what they are discussing than to keeping a proper lookout—to say nothing of “showing off” and skylarking one often sees at present, particularly among schoolboy cyclists. Having to ride single file should not be irksome, tier be a restriction on the individual any more than single-file motoring is.—Yours, etc., R. S. McKENZIE. April 28. 1961.
