City Council Vacancy

Sir.—The citizens of Christ- ( church must surely feel alarmed after reading this ' mornings issue of “The : Press” to find that Mr H. P. , Smith finds it necessary to nominate a candidate and hold a by-election for the vacancy on the City Council caused by the death of Mr W. J. Cowles. Anyone with a sense of fairmindedness would naturally assume that the man who topped the poll in the defeated candidates should be elected; and Mr R. M. Macfarlane should be elected to this position. To I the overburdened ’ratepayer I a by-election must appear an unwarranted expense.—Yours, etc., M. E. McCREANOR. April 28, 1961.
