MOTOR RELICENSING TO BEGIN SOON
The motor-vehicle registration section of the Christchurch Chief Post Office, and the other 52 post offices in North Canterbury where motor-vehicle relicensing is carried out. are preparing for the annual licensing rush. Rehcensing will begin on June 1. and vehicles must be relicensed by June 30. There are no major changes in this year's licensing. the main difference from last year being in the issue of new number-plates—black figure, on yellow for most piates. and green on white for motor-cycle L plates Licensing fees are the same as last year, but there have been small changes in third-party insurance contributions. One new company has come in to the scheme. The insurance classes have been varied a little, mainly to allow tor the extension to new groups of public and contract vehicles ot the 10 per cent, rebate for certain types of construction. An extra cost this year is the 3s 6d charged for the new num-ber-plates as against the 6d paid for last year's sticker. The forms to be completed by vehicle owners are very similar to last years. One innovation is that the portions to be filled in by the applicant have been blocked out from the rest by a heavy line.
The Post Office hopes that more persons will avoid the queues in the registration office by making their applictaion by mall. After June 1. forms will be sent out. on request, accompanied by a guide to completing them. The new number-plates will have the same initial letters for various classes of vehicles as the old ones had. but the L. H. R. and E plates issued in the South Island will carry an additional letter instead of the first number. This is because there are too many vehicles of these classes in New Zealand to be ca’ered for by the 99.999 numbers available after the first space is taken up by a letter. On the present plates, only the R series carries an extra letter. The motor-car plates for the Christchurch district will go from 630.501 to 657,150 in country areas and from 657,151 to 710.500 in the city. Although only the country post offices, the Chief Post Office, and four Christchurch suburban offices keep motorregistration files, many of the o’her city offices will issue licences over the rush period from June 1 on. Not all types of number-plates will be kept at these other offices, however, and where application is made at these offices for a type of plate which is not kept there an interim receipt will be issued and the plates posted to the applicant. The four suburban post offices which are also deputy registrars’ offices are Belfast. Sydenham, New Brighton. and Sumner. Post offices in the Christchurch district which will accept motor registrations from June 1 are: Addington, Akaroa, Amberley, Aihburton, Belfast, Burnham Camp, Cheviot,
