BOAT TO WED TO SAFETY

Son Rescues Father (N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. A young Marlborough Sounds fisherman today towed his father’s sinking 40ft trawler to safety after a fivemile dash through treacherous seas in answer -to an SOS. Picton radio received the signals from Mr Vernon McCauley’s trawler. Eastern Star, soon after 11 a m. Mr McCauley, on a trip from Bulwer to Nelson, was close in shore while rounding Hardings Point, near the Pelorus Sound, when his vessel struck a rock. It immediately began to fill with water. Picton radio made contact with all small boats in the area and instructed the nearest to go to the Eastern Star The first boat on the scene was Mr John McCauley’s trawler, Imalone. Mr McCauley took his father aboard and towed the Eastern Star to shore, where she was beached soon after noon. Once she was on the beach, crews from other launches helped load the trawler with sealed oil drums, and. in an attempt to refloat her. dragged the Eastern Star out to sea again. However, the boat stayed afloat for only a short time and sank in several fathoms of water
