NO LENIENCY FOR RAPISTS
Warning Given By Judge (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 27. Mr Justice Turner today warned that the youth of an offender would not lead the Courts to treat the crime of rape leniently. He said in the Supreme Court at Auckland that this belief might be a reason for the increase in the number of rape cases in the Auckland district and for the alarming increase in crimes of violence generally. His Honour sentenced Stanley Herewini, aged 19, workman, of Opotiki, to five years’ imprisonment for raping a 59-year-old woman. On a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm, he sentenced Herewini to two years’ gaol, and to a year’s gaol for theft, the terms to be concurrent.
