Brasil’s new capital on the central plateau MO miles north west of Rio de Janeiro enters its second year of official existence still only one-thfrd completed. The Government has announced that it cannot continue construction at the rate maintained hitherto. Housing. communications and entertainment are the most serious things which Brasilia lacks, although the overall plans of the eity, when completed. provide tor plenty of all three. The city is laid out to have “super blocks*'; and “double super blocks” for housing. as well as individual small popular housing Units. These are self-contained city blocks, each with its own block oi flats, school, market, and so on. The number of blocks of (la’s in each unit depends on the size: w’hether it is super or double super. Of 14 double super blocks built by March 1961 and no planned, only two had been others started.
