HOSTEL IN DUNEDIN
Extension To Cost £BO,OOO (N.Z. Preus Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. The Government will provide £BO.OOO for extensions to Arana Hall at Otago University to accommodate a further 58 Colombo Plan students, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced this evening. The Government was also prepared to provide Up to £lO.OOO towards the cost of more dining and recreational facilities to eater for the 140 students who would be living there, he said. Bringing students and trainees to New Zealand was one of the most useful and productive kinds of help New Zealand could offer emerging Asian countries for their economic and social development, said Mr Holyoake. The shortage of trained administrators, scientists, educationists, engineers, and agriculturists delayed the full use of natural resources, and the rise. in living standards in those countries, he said. Training Ground Though New Zealand was small, its useful combination of technical skill and "down-to-earth approach to problems" enabled her to offer a particularly good training ground for Asian students. Mr Holyoake said there were now 300 Colombo Plan students and trainees in New Zealand, and plans were being made to increase thir number substantially. Another hostel building at Massey Agricultural College had been authorised, and another building had been bought in Christchurch tor use as a hostel. Colombo Plan students and New Zealand students would occupy the hostels together, all thereby enrichenfng their experience and outlook, Mr Holyoake Mid.
