The South African Pres' Association's correspondent tn Angola reported that stringent security steps were being enforced. The regions north of the capital of Luanda are said to be constantly threatened with more terrorist attacks. Troop* have moved into many of the smaller towns and villages, evacuated by most of their inhabitants, and were combing bush area* for rebel bands, the report said. Vehicles travelled only in convoys and the drivers carried rifles and automatic weapons on journeys through danger areas. Many Losse* Portuguese Air Force pilots were flying constant sweeps over troubled areas in northern Angola to spot rebels in the bush. The S.A.P-A. correspondent said rebels had suffered heavy casualties during a recent attack on the town of Damba. about 200 miles north-east of Luanda. They attacked with rifles and home-made weapons. but were beaten off by troops and civilians. The authorities were arresting Africans in many parts of the country. They were variously accused of being leaders or members of rebel bands, attempting to stir up the African population, or holding meetings, the report said.
