CHARGES OF RAPE
Gaol For Five Men (N.Z Press Assn.— Copyright; MELBOURNE. April 26. Four young men, found guilty of raping a 17-year-old girl who was “mentaly only a child,” were sentenced to a total of 27 years’ imprisonment in Melbourne General Sessions Court today. In another Court a leading Victoria ice speed skater was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment on two charges of rape. The Judge described his behaviour as "cowardly, brutal and shocking to all decent members of the community." The men sentenced in General Sessions were aged between 20 and 22. Each term varied from six to eight years. “Only 12 years ago people were sentenced to death for this offence." Judge Cussen said. In the Criminal Court, William James Phillips, aged 24. a leading ice speed skater, was sentenced on two charges of rape with mitigating circumstances. Mr Justice Hudson said Phillips "had suggested, rather faintly, that her protests were unreal and she was not unwilling.”
