SHORTER STAY IN HOSPITAL
Report To Board
A fall in the average number of days’ stay in the Christchurch hospital, from 15.8 in 1959-60 to 13.8 last year was a most significant development, said the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board 'Dr. L. C. L. Averill) at the board's annual meeting yesterday. The increase of the number of births at the Essex Hospital, from 693 to 836. was also worthy of comment. It showed the need for the Princess Margaret maternity unit.
The secretary (Mr J. G. Laurenson) commented on the "remariiable” rise of 8 per cent, in the number of patients put through the three general hospitals. This had happened in face of a decrease from 804 to 766 in the number of occupied beds. “In spite of the smaller number of beds, we have given the public an extended service,” he added.
