MISSILE MISHAP WITH BOMBER
Pilot Of Jet Found Blameless (N Z.P. A.-Reuter— Copyright I WASHINGTON, April 25 The United States jet fighter pilot whose Sidewinder missile shot down a 852 jet bomber on April 7 had been found blameless. United States Air Force sources said yesterday. Three of eight men aboard the bomber lost their lives. A board of inquiry said an electrical malfunction caused the accident and a short circuit sent the signal that sped the missile toward the target. The jet fighter was piloted by Lieutenant James W. Van Scyoc, of the New Mexico Air National Guard.
Although the board of inquiry had not yet officially made known its report, it had become known that the board found all missile switches were in the proper "off” position. Associated Press said.
It required four separate steps in sequence to fire a missile, and the board found the vibration might have produced the accidental firing.
