“Picture Bus” From Halswell Proposed
Halswell residents may have their first Saturday “picture bus” service soon. The No. 9 District Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) said yesterday he proposed to grant an application to run the service by W. and H. Motors, Ltd., of Lincoln. Mr Haywood reserved his decision after counsel objected to "incidental rights” the licence would give the company.
These rights. Mr Haywood was told, would allow the company to do contracting work anywhere in the South Island outside a radius of 10 miles of the depot. Mr N. G. Hattaway appeared for the applicant. Objectors were Midland Motorways, Ltd. (Mr J. N. Matson), the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr W. K L. Dougall), and the New Zealand Railways (Mr L. C. Brown).
The company sought a new continuous passenger service licence to run a service from Leggs corner to Christchurch. The bus would travel by way erf Stillwells store, the Halswell Hotel, Lillian street, Nottingham avenue, Checketts avenue. Ensign street, Dunbars road, and the Main road. It would depart at 7 p.m. and return at 11 p.m. Ice Cream Carriage Because of special conditions ‘ required to carry ice cream, the Perfection Ice Cream Company, Ltd., of Christchurch (Mr F. P. Hill), was granted exemption from rail restriction.
Tffie company was also granted another vehicle authority for use without rail restriction in the No. 8 and No. 9 transport districts. Tasman Rental Cars (Christchurch), Ltd., was given permission to increase its rental car fleet by seven permanent cars. The company (Mr J. N. Matson) sought the addition of 10 cars. The application was made on the basis of demand, said counsel. The application was opposed by Gold Band Services, Ltd., (Mr H. W. Hunter). An application for exemption from the 30-mile rail restriction was refused Piesse Shingle Supplies (1960), Ltd., of Savills road, Christchurch (Mr D. E. Ames). The company was granted permission to carry builders' supplies and requirements, its own metal, gravel, shingle, scoria, sand and spoil for its own contracts. The application was opposed by the Railways Department (Mr L. C. Brown). New Licence A new continuous goods service licence with one vehicle authority was granted to John Spencer Lewin, of Main South road. Islington (Mr J. A. Bretherton). He will carry road metal, gravel, shingle, scoria, sand, pumice, soil or spoil. When carrying plant and machinery to and frcm his own contract. Lewin will be exempted from the 30-mile rail restriction. Objectors to the applica-
tion were the Banks Peninsular branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance (Mr J. J. B. Connor), and the Railways Department (Mr L. C. Brown). An amendment to a continuous goods service licence was granted to William John Elliott, of Cheviot, by deleting from the description of class of goods to be carried, the words "being the property of Sutherland and Company, Ltd., Mina.” Transport and Storage (Canterbury), Ltd., of 38 Riverview street, was granted the transfer of a continuous goods service licence from J. Vryenhoek, Ltd., of Christchurch. The applicant was represented by Mr J. A. Bretherton. A new goods service licence with authority to run one vehicle was granted to Edward Holden Wilde (Mr J. B. Williams). Wilde will deliver mail under contract to the Post and Telegraph Department. Transfer of a continuous goods service licence from Arthur Leonard Thompson, was granted to Clement John Hill (Mr W. K. L. Dougall). A Hanmer Springs taxi proprietor, Mr J. S. Hepburn, was granted a revocation of his taxi licence on the ground that he could not make his business pay. “It is always with regret that I deal with applications like this," Mr Haywood said. “A taxi provides an essential service.”
